HARVEY PERR’S OSCAR PREDICTION CHEAT SHEET

for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards
published March 7, 2010

These are not based on personal choice. I just find it more fun to watch the Oscars if the winners match my mostly cynical choices, rather than get pissed off at the wrong-headed choices of the members of the Academy who, with each passing year, seem to know less and less what a good film is.

oscars

Best Picture: AVATAR (though I won’t be surprised if INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS sneaks through)

Best Actor: Jeff Bridges

Best Actress: Sandra Bullock  (this is not a performance; it is a star turn, so it would be encouraging if Meryl Streep wins; besides, Streep gives better speeches)

Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz (I hate the idea of one single actor getting every award as if there were no other award-worthy performance, but he was good)

Best Supporting Actress: Mo’Nique (ditto)

Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow (does anyone remember that she was overlooked last year at the Independent Spirit Awards when The Hurt Locker was eligible)

Best Screenplay, written directly for the screen: Quentin Tarentino (Inglourious Basterds)

Best Screenplay, based on material previously published or produced: Jason Reitman & Sheldon Turner (Up In The Air)

Best Cinematography: Avatar (the cinematographers were right in choosing The White Ribbon but more people are voting in this)

Best Editing: Avatar

Art Direction: Avatar

Costume Design: The Young Victoria

Makeup: Star Trek

Music: Up

Song: The Weary Kind (from Crazy Heart)

Sound Mixing: Avatar

Sound Editing: Avatar

Visual Effcts: Avatar

Animated Film: Up

Foreign Film: El Secreto de sus ojos (just going along with the fact that every year the winner is a film nobody’s heard of, but if they go with one they did hear of, I bet A Prophet over the great The White Ribbon, but I hope The White Ribbon wins because it will be exciting if a genuine masterpiece gets honored)

Documentary Feature: The Cove

Documentary, short film:  China’s Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province

Short film, animated: A Matter of Loaf and Death

Short film, live action: The Door

Happy Oscar handicapping and happy Oscar watching!
